World of Hope is seen as a Motto to a community crisis that consistently seeks funding and donation to continue our cultural foodbank which we started during COVID-19. We are based in Greenwich but serves Bexley and Lewisham Boroughs. We are experiencing a huge increase in the number of families with children and elders collecting food from our foodbank and on our waiting list. These families are finding it difficult to manage financially due to unemployment, disability, asylum seeking, no recourse to public fund and, health issues, documents retained in the home office due to long queue.
According to the Trusssell Trust, the cost of living crisis has had a devastating impact on people with low income. Before the end of 2022, Greenwich Foodbanks distributed 98,000 food parcels to local residents compared to 91,602 for the whole of 2021. The charity also reports that increased demand for food banks has emotionally taken its toll on Greenwich residents. The same in Lewisham and, Bexley. We know that people attending food banks are at the extreme end of the poverty gap. However, we are also aware there are many more people who are barely able to manage financially, both old and young.
